Tourism is the temporary, short-term movement of people to destination(s) outside the places where they normally live and work and their activities during the stay at each destination.

Small 'T' Tourism

Successful small 'T' tourism can be achieved by honestly and critically examining existing events within the community and restructing/reinventing them to attract more residents and tourists/visitors from outside of the community.

Tourism is broken down into a few categories; Eco Tourism, Agri Tourism, Heritage & Cultural Tourism and most events and activities will fall into one of these.

A community must be able to objectively look at their initiatives and determine if they are working or not. Community stakeholders and volunteers who have been planning and executing events may only know that the numbers are down or not growing, and are likely to have a hard time objectively and creatively assessing needs going forward.

With an objective and creative eye, it is possible to determine the needs of an event and tailor it for success. A community event coordinator can also, by determing a communities assets be able to suggest new events that compliment the community.

Big 'T' Tourism

Big 'T' tourism is a rarer breed and usually grows around environmental and natural geological features, ie: Niagara Falls or Elora Gorge, and others are invented such as Canada's Wonderland. There are communities which, with creativity, marketing and promotion have succeeded in creating big 'T' tourism through creative thinking and cooperation ie: Potato & Garlic Festivals and Music Events etc
